TV fee: no exceptions

News | Vienna Review | February 2012

As of Jan., the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) has been charging user fees to all households that are technically able to receive its radio and television channels.

The move means that households can no longer sidestep the broadcasting licence fee even if they do not use their TV or radio connections.

According to the daily Der Standard, 98% of Austrian households are equipped to receive the channels by antenna and will be charged up to €61 a month for the use of the service.

Corinna Drumm, CEO of the Association for Private Broadcasting, says the change will add €20 million to the ORF budget in 2012.
